One thing that people seem to do with their coins is to overly handle them. No matter how clean you think your hands are if you touch the coin on its face you’ll be leaving fingerprints on it. There are also natural oils on your hands which you won’t even notice in the general course of things but which will also contribute to the degradation of the coin.

A very large and fun part of collecting coins is displaying them, and sharing this display with others to appropriately admire. The pleasure you get when you can proudly show off your collection to another person – be it another collector or not – is immense. There are many other reasons of course for displaying your coins properly, but I feel in this case at least observing the proper course of action need not be about the right thing to do of taking care of your coins.

Coin albums are by and away my favorite form of displaying coins and I have many of them stacked on the rack. Actually what I do is place coin albums one by in clear boxes until the box gets filled then I move on to the next one.

As an alternative form of storage or display you can always keep your coins in plastic coin tubes. No long-term use of PVC based products should be your goal here, although short-term use is acceptable.

These are the somewhat akin to the plastic flip pockets except there is no plastic and it’s not a pocket of any sort. Okay, so in reality it’s only the size which makes it resemble a pocket flip, in every other way a a coin 2” x 2” (pronounced two by two) holder is in a class of its own.

In the beginning there was only one Mint and no Mintmarks. Not one Mint for all the countries, but one Mint for each country. Then, as that county’s wealth grew and their capabilities grew alongside with it, there sprang up more and more Mints. Since a mintmark is an identifier for each coin and will tell you where your coin was minted, it stands to reason that you will find the mintmark somewhere on the coin itself. And this is where it might become slightly messy. Yes, the one thing that you can rely on is that a mintmark will be on a coin, or can you? What about when there is no mintmark? What then? There are of course as things go in this world, a few reasons for this.

The one really good thing that I can tell you about coin grading and coin grading services is that you should never put your whole trust in grading services. This can only invariably lead to disappointment. Not all coin grading companies were created equal, and quite a few of them are more than not inferior. There are of course a few top coin grading services, but unfortunately for the moment, these are few and far between.

Learning to grade coins is a lifelong commitment if you want to learn to do it properly. You can get all the books you want and assemble a vast library on the subject. You can learn as much as you want in as short a time as you want, but until you’ve got some good solid experience on you, you just won’t be a top coin grader.
