The track does have lights and they could have raced until 2 am if they needed to, but NASCAR officials felt the need to call off the race. Basically, the fans claim that NASCAR favors Earnhardt Jr because of who he is, and because of his last name. They quickly forgot about the previous two pit road penalties that NASCAR levied to Earnhardt Jr and the No. 88 team. The rule is in effect to protect the top 35 teams and sponsors. by Richard Paul [ 2009-02-19 ] Winning back-to-back championships is a rare feat in NASCAR these days. Many fans and analysts perceived three consecutive championships in today’s NASCAR as virtually impossible to accomplish. Cale Yarborough won three championships in a row in 1976, 1977, and 1978. Even prior to his championship seasons, he was winning, and winning often. How would a fourth consecutive championship affect the sport of NASCAR? by Richard Paul [ 2009-02-14 ] Bill Elliott announced his retirement from full-time competition following the 2003 season. Nevertheless, he continued to compete on a part-time basis in 2004 with Evernham Motorsports. In 2005 and 2006, he continued his partial schedule, driving for Evernham Motorsports and Front Row Motorsports. In 2007, Elliott began driving for the Wood Brothers in select races, hoping to facilitate the team from a performance standpoint. Elliott returned to the Wood Brothers in 2008 for a partial schedule. In 2009, Elliott is expected to compete in at least twelve races. by Jeremy Dunn Dunn [ 2009-02-02 ] Most NASCAR fans will agree the Roush Fenway Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, Richard Childress Racing, and Joe Gibbs Racing are at the zenith of the sport when it comes to on-track performance and achievements. Earnhardt Ganassi Racing has their share of critics, but they have two talented drivers with solid sponsors. Montoya and Truex Jr are both capable of winning a race in 2009 with Earnhardt Ganassi Racing equipment. In due course, this team will flourish with Stewart and Newman as the drivers. Richard Petty Motorsports: Like Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, Richard Petty Motorsports is fresh off a merger and name change. Penske Racing: Kurt Busch is the only driver in Penske Racing’s three-team shop that can really threaten the big four. Ryan Newman won thirteen races in Penske Racing equipment, but bolted after three sub par seasons. Yates Racing: Yates Racing has made some bold moves this off-season. Red Bull Racing: Red Bull Racing has a couple of young drivers that will put it all on the line. Michael Waltrip Racing: David Reutimann is Michael Waltrip Racing’s strongest driver based on his result over the 2008 season. by Jeremy Dunn Dunn [ 2009-01-29 ] The term silly season is an extensively used term in the world of NASCAR. Take the 2007 season for example. In 2008, Roush Fenway Racing driver Jamie McMurray found himself in the midst of silly season discussions. Following the race at Bristol in March, which is only the fifth race of the season that encompassed 36 races, McMurray’s team had fallen outside the top 35 in owner’s points. By April,Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman dominated silly season headlines. by Jeremy Dunn Dunn [ 2009-01-12 ] Earnhardt, Jr. spent most of the first half of the season among the top three in the Sprint Cup championship standings. Only six drivers in the entire Sprint Cup series scored more top five finishes. Most significantly, Earnhardt, Jr. won a race, something that Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Matt Kenseth, and twenty-two other full-time drivers could not accomplish.
A true measure of a driver’s performance is the driver ratings. Driver rating’s are an intricate formula consisting of wins, finishes, top fifteen finishes, average running position while on the lead lap, average speed under green flag conditions, fastest laps, most laps led, and lead lap finishes. Earnhardt, Jr. finished the season with a driver rating of 99.0, which was fourth among all Sprint Cup drivers. In 1998 De la Rosa decided to move to Formula One as a test driver.
