School is really a second home for kids. They spend a lot of their time there during the school year, and it is only natural that parents, teachers, administrators and others want kids to be safe at school. The best way for kids to be safe is to have safety programs in place that make sense and are easy for students and adults to follow.

As an adult, it is important for you to know the safety rules and procedures at your local schools. Whatever role that you have, whether it is parent or teacher or something else, you need to know what your particular school does to keep students safe. Asking questions, reading material provided by the school, and becoming involved in the safety programs are great ways to learn about the safety precautions that your school takes to keep kids safe every single day, no matter what happens at school.

School safety programs should cover everything from playground safety to procedures for injuries to what to do in a violent situation. School safety programs should also cover the safety of kids going to and from school, whether they walk, ride a bus or are transported by family members or in a carpool. School safety programs should also include ways to deal with bullying, and plans to help kids at risk. Working with various community resources and emergency personnel is also a key to having a good safety program for your school.

It is also important to teach the kids about the safety rules and safety programs that the school has. They can't follow the rules if they don't know what they are. Explaining the reasoning behind the safety policies is a good idea because knowing why a rule is in place often helps kids understand the importance of following it. Finding ways to involve them in the safety of their peers and themselves will also encourage greater participation.

We all believe that schools should be safe places for kids. With all of the safety concerns that we have in today's world, it is imperative that school safety be a top issue for everyone in the community.
