Finally, you've taken the plunge and started your very own business venture. Now you're ready to let the people know about it. You need an impressive image to go with your newly opened business.

You need a good public relations campaign.

To jumpstart your marketing campaign, here are some of the basic steps without spending a major amount of your budget:

Number 1: Develop an effective message.

Know thyself first. That's the first step to having an effective marketing campaign. When you figure out who you are and what you do exactly, you'll be able to design your campaign to help you introduce yourself to the public in the most concise and interesting message possible.

With good marketing collateral like a brochure, you'd be able to convey your message to help you make a positive first impression, especially during such functions as trade shows, exhibits, and meetings. Plan carefully how you're going to introduce yourself to the public. A great first impression will get you good PR for your business.

Number 2: Develop an interesting story.

You know what you want to say, so the next step is to figure out how you're going to make your story interesting. Your story should inspire awe from your target readers. And how do you do that? By telling them the benefits of your products and services. Give the media and your public the value of your business.

Number 3: Write your list and check it twice.

Figure out your target audience and your media. Create your list, which of course is dependent on the kind of product and service you have. Also add the nature of your business niche. These would help you determine the kind of media you'll try to attract. Are you a local business or you want to go national?

Determining who your target audience are and where you want to do your business will help you narrow down your list and help you better concentrate your message to the media.

Number 4: Put together your press release.

Now get your thoughts together and create your press release. Don't forget to tell you story in the most concise and interesting way possible. And remember to grab the attention of your audience fast. Create an interesting 2-3 paragraphs that convey your message effectively. If you have statistics then go ahead and use it. Statistics provide your audience with information that they can relate to what is happening now.

Number 5: Put together your media kit.

Your media kit would include your press release, a brief company background, marketing collateral such as your brochure, any press clippings, and other such documents and information that would help the media to get to know you better.

In addition to the information, be sure to have an attention-grabbing package to go with your details. Before your media could even read your message, the first thing they're going to see is your package. So provide eye-catching colors for your folder. Quality makes for an even good impression for your business.

Number 6: Now send out your media kit…and don't forget to follow up.

Start giving out your press kit to your target media and make your calls after. Your follow up call should be at least a week for national, and 3-4 days for the local and regional media. Be sure to have a guide so you won't fumble your way to your introduction.

Getting known in your business niche is easy if you have a good marketing campaign. Start your media kit now and you'll be able to jumpstart your promotions in the right direction.
