The Da Vinci Code is a 2006 feature film, which
is based on the bestselling 2003 novel The Da
Vinci Code by Dan Brown. It was the second highest
grossing film of 2006.
Some controversial interpretations of Christian
history in both the book and movie, they were
criticized by the Catholic Church. There were even
protesters outside some of the movie theaters, but
in the opening weekend the film earned over $224
Million. Eventually it would reach over $758 Million.
Directed by Ron Howard [Happy Days],produced by
Brian Grader and John Calley and staring Tom Hanks
A murder inside the Louvre and clues in Da Vinci
paintings lead to the discovery of a religious mystery
protected by a secret society for two thousand years.
This mystery could could call into question the very
foundation of Christianity.
The film opens with a man being pursued by a mysterious
hooded character carrying a handgun through one of the
Grand Gallery in the Louvre. While trying to evade the
man, he is confronted by him and the man reveals himself
as Silas. Silas demands the location of the Priory's
clef de voûte or "keystone." Under threat of death,
Saunière finally confesses the keystone is kept in
the sacristy of Church of Saint-Sulpice, "beneath the
Rose." Silas thanks him, and then shoots him in the
stomach any way.
The police ask for the help of Dr.Robert Langdon
[Tom Hanks]who is a Professor of Religious Symbology
at Harvard University in trying to solve this murder
of renowned curator Jacques Saunière of the Louvre
Museum in Paris. The interpretation of hidden messages
in Leonardo's famous works, including the Mona Lisa
and The Last Supper, figure prominently in the solution
to the mystery.
Jacques Saunière was the Grand Master of the Priory
of Sion and therefore knew the hidden location of the
keystone, which leads to the Holy Grail and documents
which would shake the foundation of Christianity and
the Church. He was killed in an attempt to extract this
information from him and eliminate the top members of
the Priory of Sion. Even though all four of the leaders
of the Priory of Sion are killed, the secret is not lost,
since there is still a contingency plan which will keep
the organization and its secret alive.
The whole film is actually a misrepresentation of the core
beliefs of Christianity. It is more of an exploration of
alternative religious history. It is no wonder that there
were protesters outside the theaters when it was first
released. If you are looking for an alternative story
about Jesus and his life, this is definitely the movie
for you.
