We all "love that rascal puff," and whatever you may or may not think of this song its important to keep in mind that the reason children love it is because to them it is about a dragon and a child. Children's books have been made of its lyrics because for children and many others dragons are wonderful creatures of fantasy. As we are exposed more and more to the whimsical and cute art of many modern geniuses society is finding itself surrounded by cute dragon like creatures. Yoshi from Nintendo's game is a sort of dragon dinosaur hybrid that is very whimsical and cute both in the way in which he battles opponents aw will as in looks. This fascination with cute dragons as will as their larger cousins has extending beyond children's literature then, and into the popular culture of the world and this country.
Much of this impact can be shown to have come from the chibi affect that Japan has brought into the US, certainly Yoshi is himself a Japanese character. However much of this has been coming for a long time as dragons themselves have been popular throughout our history. For this reason dragons made it into our children's literature, and popular songs, and what we liked as children will often impact our desires as adults. Parents and Grandparents are especially venerable to this, as their decor choices take on a much more whimsical flair, as they search for works of art that would appeal to the way they think about their baby. Bergsma one of the premier Northwest artists and a master of creating warm pictures has certainly taken advantage of this with pictures such as "Birth of a Dream" which depicts a child pulling a baby dragons head around to look at a butterfly, as they stand underneath the friendly and benevolent mother dragon. Because of our existing relationship with dragons, cute pictures such as this have automatic appeal and meaning. And it is through such symbolic that Bergsma is able to portray dreams so quickly.
Many creators of children's literature have taken advantage of the automatic meaning and appeal of dragons as will. "The Tale of Custard the Dragon" by Ogden Nash and Lynn Munsinger one sees how dragons fury and power is told to show us how even the strongest will often cower in fear. "Dragon Tales" the popular child's TV show uses the automatic association of dragons with magic and wonder to help make otherwise simplistic adventures seem magical, thus allowing social and other forms of education through entertainment. It is after all very easy to learn through dragons, because they are the champions of dreams.
Cute dragons then are an important element within the expansive art of creating cute pictures both for adults and children, for their ability to reach out to people so instantaneously with such powerful symbology is matched by little else in our world.
