To Sir, with Love (1967) is a British film starring
Sidney Poitier that deals with social and racial
issues in an inner city school. James Clavell both
directed and wrote the film's screenplay, based on
the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by
E. R. Braithwaite.

The film's title song "To Sir, With Love
", sung by
Lulu, who also played one of the students,reached
number one on the U.S. pop charts. The movie ranked
number 27 on Entertainment Weekly's list of the 50
Best High School Movies.

Ideological changes in post-Civil Rights movement
America were at the heart of legendary African-
American actor Sidney Poitier's films in the late
1960s. One such film is this powerful drama, which
stars Poitier as Mark Thackery, an unemployed engineer
who applies for a teaching job because he needs the
paycheck. He lands a job at a school in London's East
End that's full of unruly teenagers who are profoundly
uninterested in learning or listening.

After several failed attempts to reach the students,
Thackery abandons the textbooks and conventional
teaching methods and, treating them as young adults,
he prepares his students for the job market. His
unorthodox style is effective.The students begin
to respect Thackery and absorb his lessons. But
his substantial accomplishments are weighed in the
balance when he is finally offered the engineering
job he had been waiting for.

I believe that you have to take into account the
year that this film was made,[1967] Mark Thackeray
[Sidney Poitier] trying to teach students in a slum
area of London. It has all of the elements--race,
poverty,and teen rebellion against the establishment.
All around them are the headlines of world events
such as the Viet Nam war, race riots in the U.S.,
the cultural influence of drugs and British music
invasion of different countries[especially the U.s.]
An yet through all of this, his unruly students
come out on top thanks to Thackery taking a different
tack; treating them like adults and talking about
things they have questions about. A lesson that we
can all learn from.

This is definitely a classic film worth watching
againafter all these years. What the will of any
person is capable of doing is limitless given the
right direction and encourgement. This point is
brought out dramatically in this film. We all
deserve a chance no matter what our backrounds
are or our skin color.
