Are you looking for solutions to a problem? Here are five steps for problem solving that will make this task easy and effective.

Set Aside Time

Find an hour or two where you can focus on problem solving without distractions. It is important to chose a time when you are most alert and productive. This may be in the morning if you are a morning person, or at night if you are a night person. Grab a snack, pull up a comfortable chair, and get ready to do some problem solving.

Write Down the Problem

Write down what the problem is. Include every aspect of the problem and why it is important that a solution be found. This step will help you to define exactly what it is that needs to change and why, which will help clarify what solution will be the most effective.

Brainstorm Solutions

Write down every idea for a solution that comes to mind, no matter how overwhelming or impossible it may seem. Once you have a list of possible solutions, circle the top three that seem like they would be the best options.

Form a Plan

See if there is a way to integrate the three best options. Are there aspects of each that can work together to solve the problem? If not, choose the one that offers the best solution, but keep the other two options as back up plans. Then break the chosen solution into simple steps, and write these down as a list.

Reward Yourself

Now that you know what needs to be done to solve your problem, find a way to reward yourself for each step you take towards the solution. This may be as simple as checking off the step on your list and showing someone who will congratulate you. It could also be buying that book you've been wanting, or treating yourself to a favorite video and a bowl of ice cream.

Pat yourself on the back, because you're becoming effective at problem solving, and with each success it will become easier to approach your problems and find effective solutions!
