The works of Beatrix Potter are being put into easy to access and downloadable Flash e-Books by the nursery art company www.kayart.net. Beatrix Potter who’s art for children helped inspire a revolution in the way children’s books where thought of is still the best selling children’s author of all time even nearly 100 years after she created her first books. Potter herself is a very inspiring figure, an intelligent scientist who struggled against societies expectations, as will as a brilliant illustrator of children’s books.
The art within the books Beatrix Potter created draws the readers in with their unique way of portraying both an imagined animal world and the human world of the early 20th century. This collision of worlds is a wonderful way to help inspire children’s imaginations and play for in her books Beatrix Potter tells stories of more then just events but of lives which children and adults can relate to, and more importantly of lives which for the most part you would want them to relate too.
In “The Tale Johnny Town-Mouse” for example children get exposed both to a world where the creatures sneak around, yet live warm happy and very friendly lives. In the world Beatrix Potter offers readers in this book children can take advantage of the pleasure they often get with sneaking around, or pretending too, while at the same time they are being shown a world where friends explore their different societies and come to enjoy each others company for these differences.
One thing that perhaps makes Beatrix Potters works so effective is that she is not writing from the perspective of having or being around children, but rather of having been a child. As Beatrix Potter’s natural and brilliant curiosity and intellect where often repressed as a child she likely found comfort in her art. It is here we see the stories she created forming, as an extension of the world she lived in, often featuring rebel characters as she was. It is interesting to notice that these rebels are often punished for what they do, in a much more martial way then many would think was acceptable today.
At times in her books as with most children, the characters are punished more then once for repeating the bad action. Peter Rabbit is punished by being sent to bed without supper in “Peter Rabbit”, yet still does something similar in “Ben Bunny” thanks to his companion, and is spanked for it.
The punishment and consequences in these stories can offer parents two positive points for their children. They can show that although Peter was sent to bed without supper it did not mean that he was unloved quite the opposite. It is often easier to understand this looking from the outside at someone who very clearly made a mistake. Here again one can see in “Ben Bunny” Peter being pressured into something he is afraid to do by his cousin. One can use this as an opportunity to discuss this mistake with children and the potential consequences of being pressured into doing something wrong.
Beatrix Potter forever changed the face of art and literature and so deserves the high praise she receives. This is why kayart.net is offering her books for free at http://www.kayart.net/games.html, because as one of the shapers of our thinking today everyone should have easy access to here books.
