The Enlightenment, colonization, the progress of communication, the age of technology, and the recent post-modern times – these periods and trends have each brought massive change to the world. And through it all the game of Blackjack has remained an enduring favorite casino game. This incredible popularity can be attributed to both the intrinsic appeal of the game and its ability to adapt to fascinating new forms.

The precursor of Blackjack was vingt et un (“21”), first played in the 17th Century in France. Vingt et un differed from modern Blackjack in some minor respects, yet it offered an intriguing blend of luck and strategic play not unlike the modern game. As a result it was a favorite game of the French colonists that headed for the New World. And it would be in this new land of opportunity that the game with enormous potential would blossom.

It was indeed in America that the game was given the name “Blackjack” and took on its modern form. Facilitated by travel and communications, playing Blackjack became extremely popular throughout the continent as well as back in Europe – so popular that the American government introduced regulations that banned it and made it an underworld game in the US, without however managing to undermine its growing popularity. Many new varieties emerged as the game traveled around the world, but this growth was inconsequential compared to the next big development – the emergence of computers, the Internet, and the widespread accessibility of advanced technologies.

Blackjack spread like wildfire soon after the first online casino came into being in the mid-1990s. Those who wanted to play Blackjack simply had to log onto an online casino and select a game suited to their tastes. Online casinos helped eliminate many of the reasons why Blackjack could not be played before – they made access almost universal, free, and gambling did not have to observe the restrictions of space and time – all gamblers needed was internet access and the desire to play.

The period of the existence of online casinos roughly coincides with the emergence of postmodernism in art and its various manifestations in everyday life. Conventional connections ceased to exist, it was possible for one entity to have several almost unrelated aspects. The physical result of this phenomenon was an abundance of new things, a break from convention and the emergence of many variations and intermixing of genres. This is indeed valid for online Blackjack. If for instance you log onto Red Lounge Casino (redloungecasino.com), which is one of the most popular online casinos in the UK, there is an extremely wide variety of Blackjack games, ranging from relatively conventional versions to intriguing hybrids with other casino games and variants ideally suited to cater for the tastes of non-mainstream players.

Playing Blackjack has indeed evolved remarkably from 17th-century France to sleek modern laptop computers, but this development would hardly have been possible without the game’s inherent ability to challenge analytical thinking and provide varied and exciting game play.
