It was not long ago that mobile phones became a part of our daily life. Those old days of waiting for a phone, and getting tensed of the line complaints no more exists. The entry of mobile phones has really marked a milestone in the history of telecommunication.

It was in 1977, the Japanese company NTT launched the first commercial cellular network. The automatic cellular network was first introduced in the mid of 1980s and Nordic Mobile Telephone system in 1981. It was the beginning of a boom in the telecommunication network, which later swept Europe and U.S. Radiolinja, the Finland based company launched the modern cellular communication network in 1991, marking a turning point in the field of telecommunication.

The companies including Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, SonyEricsson and LG rule the 75% of the total mobile phone market in the world, out of which Nokia owns 36% of the market, making it the largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. It’s noteworthy that Luxembourg enjoys the highest mobile phone penetration in the world, with a 164%.
Its of course stunning to know that the total number of phone subscribers in the world had reached 2.14 billion in 2005, which later reached 2.7 billion in 2006. It is estimated that almost 80% of the total world population subscribe mobile phone service in 2006. While it may reach 90% in 2010.

It took twenty years in transforming the mobile phones from expensive, rare, equipment belonging to the upper-class business elite to a low-cost personal item. There are certain etiquettes to be followed while using cell phones. Care should be taken to avoid phones ringing during funerals, weddings, in toilets, cinemas, and plays. Users often speak loudly in book shops, libraries, cinemas, offices and hospitals as it may create disturbances. Usage of mobile phones are completely banned in aero planes as they can affect the aircraft radio communications.
