Only those who never communicated with Dutchmen can say that they are cold, stiff and boring people. Even though they sometimes look too discreet, they are in fact very inquisitive and active. They simply adore traveling and visiting cultural events. Even the smallest village has its culture centre where they organise concerts are exhibitions. Gloomy peasants like these events as well – be it an orchestra concert, a motet or a concert by a world-known soloist, many of which, by the way, often come to visit Dutch villages. Many people would agree that Dutchmen are a nation with an innate feeling of beauty. Any “boring” housewife, even if she was brought up in a complete austerity, can turn her window-sill into a piece of high art. Every peace of land Dutchmen get they turn into heaven – even angels could be envious about this. Just have a look at “hand-made” tulip fields. One look – and for many years your soul will be filled with that wonderful feeling of eternal beauty.
Channels look like silver arrows flying to the horizon. They enrich this land with pangs of love, and the land gives birth to outstanding artists full of great inspiration.
Still, the Dutch are rather stingy – this is the quality in which they could even compete with the French. “Evil tongues” say that Dutchmen still have special separate boxes with numerous sections in which they keep money. Each section has its inscription: food, clothes, vacations, breakfasts for children… A real Dutch will never mix them, and even a global catastrophe will never make him take money from the “vacations” section to spend them on some other purposes. I guess this is just a joke, but some Dutchmen say that they do have these boxes and keep them as family relics.
Yes, this is the niggardliness that Amsterdam, one of the most romantic cities in the world, grew on. But even if it sounds stilted, one could compare Amsterdam to the sound of an organ thickened above water. This is the place where they plant beautiful flowers and create stunning pieces of art. And that’s the main point.
