Not everyone is a scorer in basketball, but everyone can contribute to the team’s success by becoming a better rebounder.

There are 2 occasions where you have the opportunity to rebound, when you are on offense and when you are on defense. Either way, you need to learn these lessons to improve you overall rebounding skills.

1. Rebounding is all about body position.

No matter how high you jump, your opponent is still able to grab the ball away from you and your coach is always yelling, "rebound!" If this is your problem then you are probably not placing yourself in the right position to rebound. Remember this: rebounding starts on the ground, not when you get the ball on its way down. So knowing where to place your body to get the perfect position is one key to grabbing the ball. (I say one key because you must understand the second lesson.)

Another rebounding rule of thumb is that the ideal position for rebounding is placing your body between your opponent and the ball. Now take note, not all rebounds come from the rim or the board, so positioning your body between the opponent and the basket isn't always possible.

2. Anticipate where the ball will land to be a good rebounder.

If you don't know how to anticipate where the ball is going to go, knowing the right position to be in is useless. This requires common sense. For example, the ball will usually bounce off strong if the shot is taken in the perimeter. A short shot may yield the opposite result. What you should do is to always put your eye on the ball at the moment the player taking the shot. Try to predict where the ball will land and position yourself immediately taking into consideration rebounding lesson number 1. Take note that you are going to play the percentages because you can't always guess the position of where the ball will land but knowing this will increase your chances of placing yourself in the right position to get the rebound.

3. Rebounding is all about attitude.

Many have said that rebounding is all about who wants the ball more, not about who is taller or who can jump out of the gym. This is the third, and most important, lesson you have to learn. The attitude is all it takes to become a great rebounder. You may know how to get in position for a rebound, and you may know how to anticipate how the ball will bounce and where it will land, but if you don't want it, you won't get it!

Learn these 3 main factors to becoming a good rebounder and you'll be controlling the boards in no time. Know the right position, anticipate where the ball will go, and want the ball more than your opponent.
