There is a lot in the world today that distracts us. The number of technological devices at our disposal is incredible. We are constantly in touch with others through the use of cell phones, pdas, and laptops. Also, because of the internet, we have access to a great deal more information than in the past. Finally, even on our pcs we are able to have multiple websites open, emails, instant message, and switch back and forth among different windows.

Through all of this, the ability to focus is being lost. People are continually coming at us from all directions. Interruptions are no longer relegated to someone dropping in or a phone call during dinner. We are constantly answering email, the cell phone, text messages, etc… It is almost impossible to be out of touch for any great length of time.

There are some people who take pride in being “multi-taskers”. Their ego is stroked by having multiple things going at one time. Because they have so much happening, they are misled into believing that they are supper producers. Unfortunately, the reality is the exact opposite. These people tend to get the least done even though they may be the busiest. Also, distraction is a given since they tend to operate in a continual state of emergency. People like this are good at starting projects yet fail to finish many.

Multi-taskers fail to take into account the simple fact that the mind can only focus upon one thing at a time. If you do not believe this statement, try to think about two things simultaneously. It is impossible. Naturally the mind operates at light speed so it can switch ideas in nano seconds. Yet the fact still remains that it can only focus on one thing at a time.

The ability to focus is what separates all the greats from the rest. Developing this habit will instantly increase your productivity. It is a skill that can be practiced throughout the day in all of your affairs. After only a couple of weeks of concentrated effort, you will see how much your attention is increased.

I am going to give you one of the greatest secrets to humongous production. It is one that will radically alter your life. It applies as much to minor activities as the major ones. By implementing it you will see your to do list dwindle down in a short period of time. The secret is this: Focus on only one activity at a time and continue to do it until it is completed. Stop the “jumping” around in your life. Momentum is lost in the process of starting and stopping repeatedly. Focusing on a single activity to completion enables you to put momentum to work for you.
