Who doesn't like to be Big Brother? To be the all-seeing, powerful god of all? Well, perhaps not "domineering god of all" but being the all-seeing person will be just as potent, don't you think? That can be one basis why there are many issues with regards to using hidden spy cameras, assault of privacy being one of these. Power is basically something that everyone abhors and, ironically, anyone likes. Spy cams, while they are an advantage to a particular person, can be so harmful to the other. They can be an essential tool or something that will pull you down.
There is this one situation involving a teacher who used a hidden camera camouflaged as a button to videotape misbehaving students in school. The students as well as their families have filed cases against the said professor for "misusing her authority" and taping the students without their permission. True, it was against the law for the professor to do it, but if we look at it the other way, we may notice that what the professor was basically doing was revealing these behavioral matters to the public so that they can be addressed accordingly. I am pretty sure that the Virginia Tech accident is still fresh on all people's minds. Such behavioral tendencies could have been detected earlier and subsequently avoided the tragedy from happening. If a hidden spy camera is what it entails to prevent such tragic episodes, then I won't mind teachers recording their students at school in any way.
But then, there are also some who abuse the advantages of hidden video cameras. I would suppose everyone is aware of concerns of outrageous behavior caught on tape that are being utilized to blackmail a person. Or those that obviously invades someone's privacy as in placing concealed cameras in places wherein surveillance is not important, i.e. the restroom or personal quarters for reasons of personal gratification or lascivious intent. Stalking using spy video cams is also another form of abuse of this technology.
However, there's one thing that surprises me. A number of homeowners utilize nanny cameras to check their baby-sitters and house helpers while they are away. And these nannies are not conscious of the placement of the spy cam till they get caught doing some monkey business and dealt with about it. But no one seems to be whining. When they get caught abusing a child or doing something inappropriate, the matter of the nanny's claim to privacy is never raised. It is because the owners have the power to do whatever they want to protect the family and the house helper did something wrong.
So when is the use of covert surveillance cameras defensible and when is it not? Apparently, the thin red demarcation dividing them is much thinner than we thought. When the person making use of the surveillance camera is in authority, its use is justified. But if selecting to use concealed spy cameras will make us safer, then I am for it. Furthermore, why would I worry about it when I am not doing anything that is against the rules or is morally wrong? Yet as long as they maintain well behind the line, it wouldn't be an issue.
