I must say that a common denominator amongst many of my clients seems to be the fear of public speaking. As a result, I’ve read a lot of statistical information lately on this particular fear. Some polls show that as many as 70% of all people have a fear of public speaking. 70%! That means if you are included in this group, you are not alone. You are a majority, not a minority. Hopefully, you are realizing that feeling fear is normal, not abnormal. Once you realize that your body is reacting to this fear by increasing your adrenaline levels, it should be easier to overcome many of your concerns about public speaking.

This chemical reaction, adrenaline, happens to be one of the biggest troublemakers for folks who speak publicly. Adrenaline causes our palms to sweat, increases our pulse rate and creates that flushed feeling in our cheeks. Consider that this is the same adrenaline that causes athletes, musicians, politicians and others to have exceptional performance. What can this mean for you?

We need to realize that our anxiety is truly just a natural reaction and that millions of other folks just like us have the same fear. This also means that a large percentage of your audiences have your same fear. Relax, I’d bet the farm that they are rooting for you to succeed. You’ll give them hope and perhaps lessen their speech anxiety if you succeed at this task.

What is the lesson learned? Turn your adrenaline rush into a performance rush. Take that nervous energy and use it as your impetus towards a successful start in public speaking. I know you can do it, now you have to believe in yourself and do it!

Remember, this is an important tool in promoting your business and setting yourself up as an expert. Before you know it, public speaking will just be another exciting facet amongst the abilities that you already offer. After all, you are the expert…..aren’t you?
