Atlanta is the capital of the State of Georgia, and holds an unofficial name of “the capital of the New South”. The nature of this region is simply astonishing and, like all around the South, local citizens are sincere in their friendliness, which makes Georgia the most suitable place if you want to get the most positive emotions of your stay. The state’s motto is: “Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation”.
Nowadays Atlanta is a huge south-eastern economic centre, with one of the most visited airports, Coca-Cola’s headquarters and nineteen higher institutions found in it. It is no wonder that tourists are eager to visit the city and observe its attractions. The latter are spread all around Atlanta, but the energies that you will expend while searching for them are worth it.
Tourists coming to the city may turn to the Atlanta Preservation Center. From April to November it organizes unmounted excursions around the popular districts: its historical centre, Underground Atlanta, Inman Park, Capitol building and others.
Underground Atlanta includes 6 blocks with more than 120 shops, restaurants and nightclubs, all located below the street level.
“The World of Coca-Cola” museum is marked with neon signboard. This 26-feet pavilion will tell you the story of this world drink and its well-known advertising. Other Atlanta’s famous companies are Turner Broadcasting System and its cable network, including the world famous «CNN» (Cable News Network). You can even participate in an excursion around the 24-hour broadcasting news station.
To find out who was the youngest man to be awarded with Nobel Prize, go to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. A lot of useful information, including King’s short biography, can also be learnt by Sweet Auburn District map. Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King was preaching from 1960 to 1968, is opened to the public. The 23,5-acre site also includes the restored house where King was born.
To the south from King’s memorial there is historic Oakland Cemetery found where golfing star Robert T. "Bobby" Jones and Margaret Mitchell, the author of “Gone With The Wind” were buried. Real Mitchell’s fans can also visit her room in Atlanta Public Library.
Atlanta Zoo is found in Grant Park. Cyclorama – the world’s largest round panoramic painting which shows the 1864 Atlanta battle, is located next to it
If you want to explore the 60-acre Botanical garden, go to the Piedmont Park. The Buckhead district boasts of its Greek Renaissance residence, probably one of the most beautiful in the South-East. The district also includes the Governor’s Mansion with its refined gardens and Federal period furniture.
To take a rest from the city, go to Stone Mountain Park, famous for its enormous bas-relief with three figures of the Confederate States of America carved on it. The bas relief itself is carved on a granite massif. And, of course, what is worth seeing is laser show, performed on the mountain slopes in summer.
