This book is a great read for fans of medieval combat and a great resource for people interested in the middle ages and in the art of war during the Middle and Dark Ages.

Fighting techniques of the Medieval World takes a really good overall look at the whole scope of what combat was about during the thousand year period from 500 AD to 1500 AD. It introduces you to the subject in chapter one by looking at the weapons and techniques of the foot soldier. It then moves up the hierarchy of combat through the book by analyzing combat from the eyes of the generals. And it does this by showing us famous battles throughout history, Battles like the Siege of Paris and the Battle of Hastings. But it doesn’t just tell you about these famous battles, it also shows you, with maps and charts, how they were fought, how the troops moved, and how the battle unfolded. This is an excellent and dynamic approach to the subject.

There are five main chapters in the book and they cover the whole range of combat during the period from infantry to mounted warfare, command and control, siege techniques and Naval warfare.

It is very easy for any book covering a subject within the Middle Ages to be a bit too scholarly for the average fan of medieval things. But this book avoids this by being written in plain language and by supporting this writing with an abundance of pictures, graphics and images. It is clearly written, easy to understand, and full of pictures, maps, and images. It has everything a casual fan of all things medieval could want. This is the new bible for every fan of medieval things.

Extra Stuff:

One of the absolute best things about the book is the maps of famous battles. These maps give you a good understanding of famous medieval battles and how they happened. They show the terrain and the troops, and explain how events unfolded in the battle. Some of the famous battles covered this way are The Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, The Battle of Hastings in 1066 and the Siege of Paris in 885. Lots more famous battles covered and analyzed.

The Middle and Dark Ages from 500 AD to 1500 hundred AD was a tumultuous time and warfare was an integral part of the period. This book covers this most fascinating aspect of the period. And whatever aspect of medieval combat you are interested in such as weapons, knights, or tactics this book has something substantial to offer you. And it has lots of other stuff that you will really enjoy and learn from.
