Hot spots are areas of inflamed skin, that is usually caused by scratching or chewing. Itching of any kind can result in intense scratching and cause hot spots.

Hot spots are circle shaped lesions that are raw, inflamed, moist and devoid of hair. The lesions can ooze fluid and mat up the hair around the lesions. The lesions can increase in size quickly. They are commonly found on the hip, the sides of the face and body, and also on the back legs. Hot spots can also cause an elevated temperature.

Since hot spots can spread rapidly and can cause pain and discomfort. This puts dogs at an increased risk for a secondary bacterial skin infection which can be serious.

Hot spots is more common in long haired breeds. Especially in the summer months. Thus why some choose to have their dogs hair clipped in the summer time. You should consult your veterinarian on how to treat hot spots. The cause of the hot spots must be identified before correct treatment can begin. Delaying treatment of hot spots can make your pet seriously ill.
