Hill Country is a broad label that encompasses a large swath of Central Texas. In the springtime, Central Texas blooms with bluebonnets and other wildflowers, making a simple drive an exercise in serenity. Stop for some quality barbeque at any number of establishments the locals are likely to recommend, and save room for Tex-Mex, too. Texans know how to keep a person fed, and for those who are so inclined, there are wonderful local beers and home-grown wines as well.

There’s really no reason to let any appetite go unsated, including the need to hear some soul-stirring tunes. Check out the Cherry Springs Dance Hall northwest of Fredericksburg to walk on hallowed ground: Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash and many other legends took the stage here as they helped to shape the local and national country music scene. There are other places with claims to fame throughout Hill Country as well as a continuing country and Honky Tonk scene, so prepare to get your live music fix.

Other activities, of which there are many, include Schlitterbahn Water Park, outlet malls, lakes, tennis, golf and bird watching. The best way to see and do all that it takes to feel properly refreshed is to take enough time from work and find a comfortable home base from which to wander the Hill Country to your heart’s content.
