Construction on the Empire State Building began back in 1930 and it was completed in only about 14 months time. The cost of the project was just under 41 million dollars which was a steal. Prices were kept down because of the depression during the time of construction. When you first enter the lobby of the building you will be impressed by the grandeur of the Empire State Building. Plan on spending a few minutes with security here as everyone must check in. The buildings observatory is a must see while you are there. The 86th floor Observatory is 1050 feet tall and can be reached by a high speed elevator. It has a heated and cooled glass observation area and outdoor promenades on all four corners of the building. This observatory is handicap accessible and has binoculars for rent and a gift shop. If you would like to get more information on the city you can also take an ESB Observatory Audio Tour. This tour is narrated by a fictional character called Tony. It will tell you about what you are seeing from the incredible 360 degree view of the city offered by the observatory. When you combine the audio tour with the high powered binoculars available for rent you get quite a good tour of the city.
