The relentless pursuit of happiness has long been considered by humans central to the meaning of life. “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” is the most famous phrase in the United States Declaration of Independence. It is noteworthy that the declaration does not guarantee a right to happiness itself; merely a right to pursue happiness. Imagine everyone claiming their rights are being violated simply because they are unhappy!
What makes us happy? What is the single most powerful aspect of human existence we all covet, aspire to find, and often fail, only to embark on the same quest again and again? Love, of course. Finding true love, marriage and fulfilling family life is viewed by most as the ultimate success measure in their pursuit of happiness. In a prominent Supreme Court case, Loving v. Virginia, Justice Warren wrote: “The freedom to marry has long been recognized as one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free men.” (Let’s assume they meant women, too).
Yet, at the onset of the Age of Aquarius, despite its tremendous technological advances, full-proof methods to finding a mate have yet to be discovered. The effectiveness of traditional, tried-and-proven means to the pursuit of happiness is dwindling. Today, we are more likely to bump into our intended in cyberspace than on city streets. Many singles bemoan the changing dynamics of dating, deeming them impersonal and devoid of romance, seeing few dating opportunities in a world ruled by computers.
Certainly, the pursuit of happiness and ability to find love in the 21st Century require innovative thinking. Critics tend to concentrate on the negative aspects of the changing dating arena, yet an open mind and a desire to learn new tricks promises to reveal greener pastures, where today’s singles are increasingly flocking to mate for life.
Let’s address the positive aspects of the new dating trends. Never before was the pursuit of happiness powered by such immense high-tech resources. Compatibility profiles make it easier to find a partner whose goals, views and personality traits are highly compatible with yours. What are the chances of knowing whether the attractive person you just met at a local bar shares your core beliefs and is ready for commitment?
Internet dating makes the concept of blind dating obsolete, easing our pursuit of happiness considerably. Armed with preliminary information and a (hopefully recent) photo, you are less likely to keep kissing frogs to find your prince(ss). Your computer’s resources are much more effective than the matchmaker’s of yesteryear, whose most reliable source of information was word of mouth. How romantic was that embarrassing process?!
The pursuit of happiness and love in a marriage has never been considered more important than today. Marriage was once an economic transaction that had little to do with physical attraction or emotional compatibility. Romance was out of the question when many intended couples didn’t meet until their wedding day. On the other hand, the highest rates of divorce observed in the 20th Century may be related to the emerging trend of marrying for love without the advantage of knowing more about one’s partner prior to, not months into the relationship.
Consider yourselves lucky, contemporary singles, the process of informed mate selection is the closest we’ve ever come to having the best of both worlds in our pursuit of happiness. And romance… it’s still sparked by two people. Chemistry is a highly personal experience that can never be imitated by computers, but in this bustling world crossing paths with a soul mate requires a concerted matching process. Chemistry is much more likely to occur when two people have been determined a close match. Isn’t it romantic, first date with destiny?! The latest psychological research and technology make knowing, rather than hoping to know, possible. Turns out, today’s innovative computerized dating tools make the best matchmaker yet!
