Farm produce quarantine agency of Russia will impose a temporary ban on the imports of rice from Vietnam and few other nations with effect from December 4, 2006. This notification was recently given to local exporters of food by the European Department under the Ministry of Trade.

According to website Vietnamnet, Russians said that the reason of banning the rice grown in Vietnam is that it contains the herbicide Clorpiriphos, which is harmful to human being. The information instantly triggered protests and unrest from the Vietnamese food exporters and trade agencies condemning the reason as baseless and distorted.

Meanwhile, a diplomatic note has been sent to the Russian Govt. by Vietnam's Ministry of Trade for reasons stating why rice imports from Vietnam have been banned. A violation of international laws would be considered if Russia fails to explain the reasons of imposing the ban.

Russia is not the prime market for rice imports from Vietnam. Hence if the ban is imposed the rice exports from Vietnamese will not suffer massively. Vietnam's rice exports to Russia are around 100,000 tonnes and the volume for 2006 is estimated to be 62,000 tonnes.
