When you are getting ready to start podcasting, “don’t record a single word until you have a plan and the best plan to follow is the C2M2 plan,” says Colligan.
C2M2 stands for Content sources, Creation engine, Marketing method and Making money.
Content Source
Need to know where the content is going to come from. Some content sources include:
1) Content repurposing – things you already have;
2) Day in the life recordings – if you are a consultant and you are teaching someone to do something. Record yourself in action.
3) Ask your audience
4) Interviews with experts
5) Industry reporting
6) Other people’s media
Creation Engine
“The main reason why people have ‘pod-faded’ is that their creation engine was too complex and got in their way of getting content out,” says Colligan. You need to have the right tools soon as you have the content you can get it out as soon as possible. Some tools you need are:
1) A large diaphragm microphone so that you sound good.
2) A sound recording software
3) A sound leveling program
4) Compression of the files that include the right tags so that it says all the right things on the iPod.
Key to running a successful creation engine is to stay on top of the technology changes through sites like feedburner.com
Marketing Methods
A significant part of your plan needs to be the marketing plan. Make sure you have a way to market your podcasts and to get people to come and consume your message. Things to consider in your marketing plan include, but are not limited to,:
1) Listing the podcasts on your own sites and marketing to your own audience
2) Putting the podcasts on other sites such as iTunes
3) Doing press releases about podcasts will help drive traffic to the podcast
4) Tagging shows in a blog
5) Making podcasts available for download on other sites.
Making Money – Monetizing
While many people do podcasting as a passion, others do this for profit and are very successful and many more still do it for both passion and profit. There are several options for making money with your podcasts:
1) Sell it on your own terms -- if you are a pro and people will pay money to hear you this is a good way to go;
2) Sell it because of the content – if you have training material or specialized content many listeners will pay for the quality of the content;
3) Sell the content in other forms;
4) Include ‘commercials’ for other things that you are doing within the content so that you can cross-promote all your products.
Bottomline: Podcasts are not too hard if you have a plan that makes sense and can basically run the process for you and not get in your way.
