As the name suggests, clergy collars are the parts of Christian clergy clothing. These cloth pieces are detachable and complement the clergy shirts in an admirable manner. Metal studs are used to hold the collars that are mainly available in white color. Apart from that, the rank of the clergyman decides the appropriate color of the clergy collar to be worn. Invented in the start of the 19th century, these collars hold importance for different traditions in different ways.

Roman Catholic Tradition
As far as people following Roman Catholic Church tradition are concerned, the Clergy Collars are important parts of clothing for various individuals and on different occasions. For instance, liturgical celebrations require the graduate level seminarians to wear these collars. Similarly, the candidates admitted for priesthood are required to use these collars as part of their dressing. Bishops, priests and deacons, all clergy ranks wear these collars permanently in most of the cases.

Orthodox Eastern Tradition
A standard clergy collar is worn by the seminarians in the Eastern tradition. Apart from that, a band collaret is also preferred by some of the easterners. The position of buttons on the collar can differ from one group to another. For instance, the Greeks have button in the front, whereas the Slavic buttons on the side. Deacons, subdeacons and readers are seen wearing the clergy collars.

Other Traditions
In the churches of the United Kingdom, the clergy collars are better known as the dog collars. Christian ministers in various traditions also wear these collars on different types of occasions. Though, there are some places, where these collars are not preferred with dress for their association being considered only with Roman Catholicism.

Anglican and Lutheran Churches are other traditions where individuals on important ranks wear these collars. Many non-denominational churches also encourage making these collars the part of dressing.

Previously made with cotton, the clergy collars are also made with plastic and different fabrics these days. One can consider looking for these collars on internet, so as to make a choice among huge variety of products.
