Search engine optimisation is a process which improves the quality or volume of traffic to a website from search engines. For a website, higher the search rankings, more it has the chance to get clicked. When somebody searches for a related keyword to a website then the website which comes higher in the search rankings, get the most preference. Therefore, higher search engine rankings are required to get a good volume of traffic to the website. To get this, there are many search engine optimisation techniques which help to get a better search engine ranking. Search engine optimisation has a good number of techniques which are helpful to make a web page rank in search engine results. Such techniques include:
1. On-page optimisation
Head section
Title Tag
Here the title tag is not visible to the readers but to the search engine spiders. This is because these title tags appear before the body tag and are included within the head tag. It is one of the most important tags and the main keywords for which the webpage is optimized should be used here. But don’t use all the keywords in this single tag only.
Description Tag
Another important meta tag is the description tag. Search engines use this tag as a description part of the listing. Here too the main keywords should be used. Try to make the description interesting so that users will want to click on the links.
Body Section
The body section contains the content of a web page that is visible to the visitors. In this section, you must give a heading that contains some of the important keywords. Always try to optimize each page for one or two keywords only. The first paragraph of the body is also very important. One or two of the main keywords should be there in the first sentence of the first paragraph of the content.
Fonts can also be used in the heading. For example, the headlines can be highlighted in bold and underlined. Search engine spiders consider bold text to be an important part of the content.
Never use the keywords excessively in the content. Give the important keywords maximum importance. They should appear one to two times per each hundred words, and in the first and last paragraphs too. Synonyms and words that are related to the keywords can also be used.
Page Design
The webpage should be designed in such a way that the body text is visible to the spiders at first and then the links. A logical linking strategy should be used guiding spiders to crawl webpages in the order that you want.
2. Off-page optimisation
Off-page optimisation mainly includes link building strategies such as:
article distribution
press release submission
directory listings
one-way linking
multiway linking
three-way linking
Internet marketing
link exchanges
blogging
link campaigns (involves asking other complementary businesses to link back to your website)
social networking
forum posting
These are some of the techniques, following which you can get your website a higher ranking in the SERPs.
