Although all breast implants have a solid silicone shell, they are filled with different substances. Your choices are either saline or silicone gel. Or just about as long as they have been on the market, there has been an ongoing debate on which is more natural looking and safer. Here, we’re going to examine breast augmentation surgery itself, then take a look at what makes the type of implants different.

Breast augmentation surgery is a common cosmetic surgery procedure that is growing in popularity. The surgery itself is a very simple surgery done under general anesthesia with a local at the end to help minimize discomfort. Scars are well hidden and the success rate is very high. Of course, this surgical procedure involves placement of breast implants.

The saline type breast implant has an exterior sack made of silicone, and this is filled with a sterile saline solution--much like the saline solution administered in intravenous fluids. One of the big advantages of this solution is its safety factor. Should the implant leak, the saline solution simply gets absorbed by your body, as would IV fluids which are used during surgery. Another advantage of the saline solution type implants is the low infection rate. One strong advantage of the saline solution type implant is the ability to be filled with fluid after being inserted in the breast using a very small incision. Because saline implants are filled after insertion, their final volume can be adjusted according to breast asymmetry.

Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel substance. This material is softer and more natural to the touch than saline breast implants. They are known to feel so soft and natural that it is very often impossible to tell them from actual natural breast tissue.

Rippling is far less likely in women with silicone implants than in women with saline implants. This is due to the silicone gel, which is far thicker than saline. Silicone implants can be placed over top of the muscle with little body fat or little breast tissue without the aesthetic concerns that are associated with saline implants. Hence, the major benefits of silicone breast implants are in the realm of a more natural look and feel.

No matter your choice, it’s imperative that you and your cosmetic surgeon have a candid and honest discussion about which type of implant will benefit you and your goals the most: silicone or saline.
