Most people think of a rhinoplasy, or nose job, as a cosmetic surgery procedure that is done to help your face to look better. Some believe that it’s a frivolous procedure that is done only by people who simply want to look better. In truth, however, a rhinoplasty is an important procedure for people who have breathing problems and who want to be able to breathe better through their nose.

Not everyone is born with a nose that can do what it’s supposed to do perfectly. Some people have what is known as a deviated septum. A deviated septum can be caused by birth, where the nose is compressed during the birth and can cause a displacement of the nasal septum. This condition can also be caused due to a blow to the face, such as if you get hit or if you have some sort of an accident that causes the nose to be misplaced. The resulting displacement of the septum can lead to breathing problems.

Another fairly common problem with breathing is sleep apnea, and this can be quite serious. Sleep apnea is a medical condition in which a person actually stops breathing when they’re asleep. This causes the brain to be deprived of oxygen and, if the sleep apnea is serious enough, a person can suffer permanent brain damage or even die from the condition. Sleep apnea that is caused by a nasal problem can often be corrected by having a nose job done by a skilled plastic surgeon. This opens the nasal passages so that breathing comes much more naturally and easily.

Many patients who undergo a rhinoplasty say that they’re surprised at how much better they can breathe after the procedure, even when they didn’t think that they had any breathing problems at all. People who have breathing problems may also be able to get their insurance companies to pay for the procedure as it is medically necessary, which is a definite advantage.

If you suffer from breathing problems, talk to your doctor about how getting a nose job might help you. You may discover that rhinoplasty is the way to go to eliminate your breathing difficulties once and for all.
