Liposuction is a common cosmetic surgery procedure to remove small bulges of fat. These fat deposits may remain after weight loss, changing your body’s shape undesirably. Liposuction can remove stubborn pockets of fat in the hips, abdomen, thighs, buttocks, face, and nearly anywhere else on the body.

A good candidate for liposuction is in good overall health, at average or slightly above-average weight, and not planning on significant weight loss or gain in the future. The excess fat deposits that do not respond to diet or exercise should be concentrated in specific areas which can be targeted by liposuction, which is not a whole-body treatment. Firm, elastic skin improves the results possible from liposuction. Though age is not usually a concern, older patients usually have less skin elasticity, which does affect the outcome of liposuction.

Although liposuction is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, significant amounts of fat removal may require an overnight stay. In most cases, local anesthesia is used, though again, large areas may require general anesthesia. In liposuction, a small stainless-steel suction device known as a cannula is inserted into the fat between the skin and muscle, removing the fat through a small incision in the skin. The procedure’s length can vary greatly depending on the amount of fat being removed.

There are several different techniques used during liposuction procedures. In tumescent liposuction, a solution is injected into fatty areas to make the fat easier to remove and provide pain relief. In ultrasound-assisted liposuction, ultrasonic pulses break up the fat, making it easier to remove.

Recovery is very fast after liposuction; most patients return to work in just a few days. You can expect bruising, swelling, and soreness in the areas where fat was removed. It will take up to six weeks for the full results of your liposuction procedure to become apparent. Liposuction permanently removes fat cells, though it will not keep you from regaining weight in the future. Complications are rare; the risks include infection and skin discoloration. Your risks can be reduced by avoiding excessive fat removal in a single session.
