While many teeth whitening products are available over the counter, they do not provide the same instant dramatic results that are possible with professional teeth whitening. Even the professional at-home treatments contain a concentration of bleach that is not available over the counter. Many over the counter products to provide some benefit, but for maximum results, professional teeth whitening should be used.
The best candidates are those who have unrestored teeth and who have the types of staining that best respond to professional teeth whitening. Typically, yellow stains respond best. Some types of stains will show no improvement after treatment, including gray stains, such as those that appear after using certain medications.
The only way to know for sure how effective professional teeth whitening will be for you is to make an appointment with your dentist. In addition to evaluating your staining to see if you are a suitable candidate, he will be able to discuss how much improvement you can expect.
There are different types of professional teeth whitening. Two of the most popular are discussed below.
CUSTOM TRAYS
For this treatment, custom trays are created based on the patient’s mouth. This treatment is completed at home by the patient, but the trays are created by the dentist and the bleach solution sold by prescription.
Simply apply a small amount of the bleaching solution to the inside of each tray and wear for the amount of time prescribed. The change is gradual, and the cost of this type of treatment is far less than the laser whitening.
LASER WHITENING
Unlike the treatment using custom trays, the results of laser whitening are often fully realized after just one treatment. A bleaching gel is applied to the patient’s teeth and is then activated by a laser light. Many patients report teeth that are up to ten shades whiter in one treatment.
Not everyone will achieve the same results, and some patients may require more than one treatment. Some patients with very sensitive teeth find the laser whitening uncomfortable.
