Pool chlorinators are the most effective devices used for maintaining required chlorine levels in swimming pools, thereby protecting the pools from algal, fungal and bacterial growth. Pool chlorinators are usually attached to the pool filtration or circulation system, and they release the required amount of chlorine evenly into the water. However, chlorine is a corrosive chemical and must be handled with great care.

Pool Chlorinators: Types
There are four kinds of pool chlorinators available in the market:

Automatic chlorinator – Also called automatic chlorine feeder, this device automatically delivers the exact amount of chlorine into the pool. The water from the pool is first pumped into a filter, gets transferred to a heater (if installed) and then returned to the pool. Chlorine feeders use chlorine tablets or sticks of varying sizes, according to the pool requirements. The device has a control valve through which one can adjust the rate of feed. Automatic pool chlorinators are durable, corrosion-proof and cost-effective and do not require special maintenance.

Salt chlorine generator – Salt chlorine generators are preferred by many because they are safer than plain chlorine. Salt chlorine generators convert the small quantity of salt added to the pool water into hypochlorous acid. There is a particular type of salt chlorine generator that comes with the requisite amount of salt, and hence, does not require manual application of salt in the pool water. Chlorine generators are ideal for above ground and in-ground pools made of plaster, vinyl or fiberglass.

Gas chlorinators – Chlorine gas is the most lethal form of chlorine and also the most effective for use in swimming pools. However, these may create an imbalance in the pool pH, creating a caustic and unsafe environment for recreation. Other chemicals may have to be added to the pool to bring the pH back within a safe range. These devices may also cause certain health problems. Therefore, gas chlorinators are not often used in residential setups.

Liquid chlorinators – This device is often preferred to gas chlorinators. Liquid chlorine looks and smells like bleach and is created by bubbling pure gas through caustic soda. The results are fast; however, these can wreak havoc with the pH balance of the pool. Moreover, storing chlorine at homes can be dangerous.

Pool chlorinators are available in various chemical forms and under different brand names. For purchasing the best brands of pool cleaners, filters and other supplies and accessories at the most reasonable rates, visit www.poolproducts4less.com.
