Very little is known about Ratan Tata, the man. Of course, his corporate achievements have been chronicled widely, especially after the Corus, Jaguar - Land Rover acquisitions and of course, the nano project, the people's car, that made Ratan Tata a household name, mostly because he promised a car that even a middle-class Indian could afford. But this corporate head honcho's private life remained just that, very private.
Tiwari starts with an overall view of the Tata family history right from the time Jamsetji Nusservanji Tata stepped into business world from the small town of Navsari in Gujarat. Ht later chronicles the family tree and the growth of the Tata brand. As the page turn, it becomes apparent that the book is basically more about the Tata Group, and its associate companies. It narrates the growth of the company, diversification, brands, acquisitions, it's global business and social trusts. Of course, there's an interview with the man himself, but, but, but... dating back to 2007 and reproduced from business world. Surely, a book on Tata, whether on the group head or the company, could have merited a personal, exclusive interview!
Agreed, the book covers the company's journey in great detail. A few chapters are totally devoted to the Nano, right down to the car's specification, test-drive and other nitty-gritty. It even chronicles the Nano debacle in Singrur and its subsequent move to Gujarat, the Taj-Mehal hotel attack, it's rebuilding and re-opening, the companies plan for an internal anti-terror machinery, people's views and articles on Ratan Tata, awards and global recognition, but still you come away feeling deprived. Because apart from what is already known about Ratan Tata, he's a bachelor, is a devoted Parsi, lives alone with his books, drives himself to work in a Tata car, likes simple home cooked food, flies his own aircraft and has huge art collection, the book has nothing more to offer. Well, a let-down for me but a few colleagues who follow the market avidly and are financial cuffs seemed eager to borrow it. So to each his one. You can read this on your Amazon Kindle. It's an ok read so when you get time just pick up your amazon kindle and start reading it.
