In swimming pool structures, it is common to have extensive remodeling and major and minor repairs. Replacing and removing the portions of the pool structure can be easily done by following certain procedures that are given below. These will help you to have gunite repair and attain proper bonding of the repair materials with the presented pool structure. It is very common to experience the empty spaces and other defects in mortar or concrete that is applied pneumatically in construction of swimming pool.

When you experience, it indicates that the surface of applied material pneumatically is not well bonded with the underlining substrate. It is also possible that rebound is allowed to remain in localized areas and not covered from the underlining substance. Rebounds are actually made with the help of harder and larger particles and not consist of sufficient density, water or cement that can develop strength.

Therefore, we can not use rebound in any application that require hardness, durability and strength. These are generally experienced on the surfaces that are horizontal like shallow access steps, tops of water benches and pool floor. Before application of pools plaster surface, rebound should be eliminated because the rebound near or on the gunite surface can become uncovered. We can remove it with the help of pneumatic and light weight jack hammers which can eliminate the uncovered and soft rebound with structural shell undamaged.

To attain proper boding of repair material to the already existing pool structure, following steps should be followed:

• Clean the existing surface. It should be defect free, sound and does not contain bond inhibiting materials.
• Water blasting should be used to clean the existing surface.
• To get an open pore structure, you must rough the existing surface by chipping or using some other means. Remove all the cracked, deteriorated and loose materials.
• To prevent drying of boding paste, you must maintain dry condition of saturated surface of substance.
• Expose the strength exposed in the remodeling or repair with at least 1 inch clear totally around the support to allow proper encasement of the strength in the repair substance.
• You can use dry pack mortar for small repairs to reduce the probability of shrinking cracking in case where it is not possible to use applied material; for repairing.
• Pre packaged products like rapid set concrete mix and rapid set mortar mix which is used for thinner repairs are fast setting products and are appropriate for minor repairs.
