Every tropical location needs a few palm trees to help set the mood and create ambience. You’re probably sitting under one of them now; heck, they’re scattered around Puerto Vallarta villa rentals like pennies in a fountain. It’s impossible to say exactly what kind of palm you’re gazing at right now, but there is one particular plant that deserves a bit of recognition.
Smile when you call me C. nana
Mexico is renowned for the diversity of plant life thriving within its borders; experts estimate there are as many as 26,000 unique species of green, growing things native to the country. In the region of Banderas Bay and Puerto Vallarta, Cryosophila nana, C. nana to its very good friends, is among the most viable species. In spite of its imposing name, it still looks for all the world like a palm tree - a slender, 15 ft. palm tree.
Apparently, C. nana is not very well known outside its immediate neighborhood (much like last year’s homecoming queen). That’s a bit surprising, because it gets along just about anywhere; it likes the sun but it’s okay with shade, it likes heat but won’t turn its back on a bit of cool. And this guy has the ability to put down roots in the most unlikely circumstances.
New life in those old stems
According to Dr. Felix Montes, this palm will grow back from a cut stem. And the spikes on its trunk will take root when gardeners leave cuttings laying on the ground (note to self: don’t drop branches on the grounds of Puerto Vallarta villa rentals without permission – they’ll probably start growing a new crop). In short, this tree propagates like a weed!
Not so the Caoba tree, a native of Mexico’s tropical forests. The big leaf mahogany (its common name) grows in Central and South America, as well, and while you won’t see this beauty in town, it’s worth mentioning because it is a threatened species. Mahogany lumber polishes to a lovely luster and craftsmen find it easy to work with, which makes it highly prized for building furniture and cabinetry because it works up beautifully with hand or power tools. Mature trees can be over 100 ft. tall with trunks that measure up to 6 ft. in diameter, and these giants are often harvested from natural, old-growth forests, where too often, no one is watching over their status.
