Drilling deep underwater is something that poses a difficult task. This is because you want to make sure that you have the perfect components for the job at hand that will not only be able to drill out the area that you need, but it will also be able to function in a harsh environment. In fact, using a seadrill in deep regions like twenty two hundred meters of water is something that requires a great deal of engineering skill as well as a capable operations team. For many years it has been a goal of companies to be able to engineer a seadrill that will not only work well, but that it will be able to harvest important core samples while leaving them intact enough so that they can be studied.
Another aspect of the seadrill that has to be taken into consideration is the type of terrain that the machine will have to navigate in order to successfully collect its core sample. For example, if you are going to need a drill that is going to be in regions where there are hot water vents, then you will have to make sure that it can pass through pockets of very cold and very hot water. This can be problematic as the casing of the seadrill will have to protect it from these varying temperatures so that it can still operate in an effective manner.
On top of this the seadrill needs to be able to operate in a variety of different seabed formations and sediments. This is because when you are drilling this deep underwater you may not know what you are going to be dealing with. Even though the sea bed may look like it is fairly stable, when you start to drill you may find that the ground underneath is actually made up of soft mud. This could pose problems with the drilling process if you have not adequately compensated for the torque force that will have to be used by the seadrill in these conditions. As such, the drill will need to be able to recognize the different types of sea beds that it is working in so that it can abort the mission if necessary. Otherwise the drill might hit an area of hard sediment and overheat.
In addition to these factors, the seadrill will need to be able to navigate around steep drop-offs and rising sea vents in order to be able to successfully collect its sample. The sea bed is much like the land that is above water in that it has various formations and odd regions that will be able affect how the seadrill will navigate. If you need to be able to collect a core sample from an area with such formations, then finding a way to make sure that the drill can collect this sample successfully is something important that will have to be engineered into its design.
In all, building and using a seadrill is a difficult prospect. This is why it takes years of research, engineering, and testing in order to make sure that you have a piece of equipment that will be able to fit your needs.
