Student medical insurance is one part of insurance that gets a bit tricky. For starters, most students are at an age when they don't believe they even have a need for insurance. If your son or daughter is going away to college and can no longer be kept on your insurance, then they need to understand about getting some insurance of their own. There is a whopping 30% of all students who don't bother to get medical insurance. If anything should happen that they need it, the consequences can be devastating.

College graduates are supposed to land good jobs upon leaving school. And if that happens, then more than likely their employer will carry some sort of medical insurance that they can take advantage of. But college can be, at the least, a four year experience. What about those four years? What is the student to do to ensure they don't become a burden on their parents who have put them through school to this point? How do they become totally independent?

They become independent by keeping their own medical insurance. They'll find that most of the insurance plans out there for students are very flexible in nature. They can tailor one that suites their needs as well as their budget. The student plans, since most people at that age are pretty much healthy, are more for covering any 'catastrophic' events and medical expenses. But they can get as much coverage as they want. It's a judgement call on their part.

Medical insurance for parents leaves them without the option of keeping their new student son or daughter on their policy. And in today's world, most of our learning institutions require that a student maintain at least a minimum amount of medical insurance coverage. They even have plans available at the institutions for the new students to take advantage of. They aren't ideal policies, but they at least can protect against total financial disaster.

In today's society, there's a lot of emphasis in being fit. It's really ramped up in the last decade or so, and our young people are very much into it. Today's college student is much more health conscious than students of years ago. At this age, the premiums and rates are much more friendly than for those who are older. It makes it possible and easier, amidst all the other costs of getting an education, to be able to afford medical insurance as well.

Student medical insurance is just as manageable as other insurance. If you don't mind raising your deductible, then you can get a lower premium. And you should always make sure that whatever plan you decide on, your favorite personal physician is included. And be sure to check on the prescription drug policy within your insurance policy. Should anything happen that requires prescription drugs, and you're not covered, you could find yourself bankrupt in no time. It's a sad, but a true, reality. Financial devastation happens all the time, to people who went through an unexpected circumstance, and were under-insured.
