Dentistry is the branch of science which deals with the study of the anatomy and development of teeth as well as their various diseases and prevention methods. Professionals practicing dentistry are called dentists. The other professionals involved in this branch of medicine are dental assistants, dental therapists, dental hygienists and dental technicians. The first dental school to be opened was the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1840. The school is located in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. In 1867, the second dental institute, Harvard Dental School came into being.
A student can be become a qualified dentist on completion of his/her graduation, holding a degree in either Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), Bachelor of Dentistry (BDent), Bachelor of Dental Surgery/Chirurgiae (BDS/BChD) , Bachelor of Dental Science (BDSc) or equivalent. In the western countries, the minimum eligibility for a person to become a dentist is on the successful completion of at least 4 years of post graduation in the related field. In the European Union, the eligibility criterion for the same is at least 5 years of education.
Generally, dentists have to study for 5–8 years in the post secondary level before beginning practice. However, there are many dentists who enter into the specific fields of dental healthcare on completion of their internship and getting the dental degree. In the U.S, there are around 9 recognized specialties in the field of dental care. For these, one has to train in the advanced or residency graduate programs. On successful completion, the doctor is granted certificate for practicing in that field legally.
Again, many of the specialty programs have optional or mandatory advanced masters, medical and doctoral degrees. Here is a list of the some of the various branches of study in dental education:
