Water is an essential element of earth our environment and our body. One should always conserve water and also keep the water reserves clean for safe drinking and usage. In today’s world, everyone is striving to maintain good sanitation and ensure safe drinking water to all the communities on earth, rural or urban. Water can be made safe to use, through water purification plants or by using natural sources of water. Water boreholes are also one of the sources to get pure natural underground water. People living near rivers, lakes and ponds can easily drill water boreholes to access underground water.
Sources of Water
There are various sources of underground water such as springs, wells and boreholes. The water gathered from these sources cannot be used directly for drinking or domestic use; it needs to be purified through various methods. The water may contain impurities, microbes or other contaminants which are harmful for health. Hence, the water from these boreholes should be tested for the basic parameters such as pH, salts, microbes, etc. and should comply with the FDA and IBWA standards before use. Underground springs can also be tapped through a borehole.
Benefits of Water Boreholes
The water from these boreholes is free of microorganisms, if the underground source is pure, natural and protected. The water is deposited through the rains for several years and is filtered by the layers of rocks. It is rich in minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Ions like chlorine and bicarbonate are also present in abundance. In some cases, it is further purified by the water refining plants and used for bottling mineral water. The water is made clear, odour free and can be sterilized with UV treatment.
Another benefit of a water borehole is that one becomes self reliant and sufficient in terms of water requirement. Personal boreholes serve unlimited quantity of water any time and every time, although relevant legal abstraction limits must be adhered to. Water is also pure and free of added chemicals. One need not pay the water bills or get a license for such boreholes to a certain limit of drilling.
Women are more benefited by drilling water boreholes in rural areas. Their burden of carrying water from long distance is reduced, thereby, saving their time. This time can be utilized in doing several activities that would add to their earnings and so improve their socio economic conditions. Accidents caused while fetching the water from well, river or stream can also be averted. The time limitation of fetching water only during daytime is also removed. They can get the water from these boreholes at odd hours during night. Some women can assist their men on fields and others can indulge in their hobbies.
On the other hand, water from these boreholes can be used for irrigation purposes, maintaining independent gardens and other land and property development. Due to these boreholes one need not depend on rains for their irrigation purpose and get ample amount of water for all the construction purposes. Moreover, the energy required to extract water from them is less as compared to that in water purification plants. The problems arising due to pumping system, pipe leakage and others can also be averted by drilling the water boreholes.
