Although many people experience tooth discoloration, this does not mean that it is a problem which you must simply live with and accept. In most cases, it can be treated. There are some very good reasons why you should seek advice from your dentist, instead of trying to learn to tolerate these dental concerns.

Tooth discoloration can have an effect on your everyday life. You may not be as confident in the workplace or with your friends if your teeth are noticeably gray or yellow. It can impact your social life, as you may be embarrassed to let other people see your teeth. You may become ashamed of your appearance.

While these are valid reasons for addressing your dental concerns to your health care professional, there are other, more urgent reasons. Discolored teeth may be a symptom of a serious medical condition. You may not even know that you have the condition, other than the effect which it has on your teeth.

Tooth discoloration can also come from using certain medications, particularly prescription antibiotics. In order to prevent possible damage to your teeth, if you notice discoloration while you are using any medication you should bring it to the attention of your doctor or dentist.

Discolored teeth in youngsters can present special dental concerns. As a common cause of this problem in children is the lack of adequate dental care, the child may be setting himself up for a lifetime of oral difficulties. The child who has discolored teeth due to lack of regular brushing is also preparing himself for cavities, the possibility of gum disease, and all of the health concerns which accompany poor dental care.

Tooth discoloration is much more than a cosmetic issue. While every person naturally wants to look his or her best, discolored teeth may have more serious dental or medical implications. The only way to know for sure is to have your teeth checked by your dentist. He can determine the cause of the problem, and recommend treatment.
