The supply of cannabis is a huge, and in many countries illegal, industry. This has lead some commentators’ to call for its declassification, allowing many people to be lifted out illegality and allowing revenues to be generated via its taxation. This article will look at some of the attitudes surrounding cannabis and marijuana and discuss the possibility of declassification becoming a reality.

Thousands of people use cannabis daily, many see it as a way of life. Cultures have been created around cannabis, no other recreational drug seems to have such a widespread and popular following. However, the numbers of people using cannabis is incredibly low in comparison to the number of people drinking alcohol every day. Alcohol is socially acceptable, viewed by many as a part of the culture. It is featured regularly in films and television, and although there are strict rules that govern how it is advertised, the effects of the alcohol industry can be seen throughout the media.

The proponents of the declassification of cannabis will point to the numbers of people who are injured or even killed due to alcohol use every year. Yet more people are effected by alcohol indirectly either through injuries or fatalities cased by people under the influence. Another category of people affected by alcohol is through living in close proximity to people addicted to alcohol.

The level of social acceptability that alcohol has seems mainly down to tradition, fermentation has been used to create alcoholic drinks for literally thousands of years - tales of drunken escapades are one backbone of the sea-fairing tales of yore. Could this acceptability have coloured how we view alcohol today? It is now used as a recreational pastime for large sections of the population. People are often surprised when acquaintances state that they don’t ‘drink’.

So why is cannabis different? Can it simply be the lack of a rich history interwoven with mainstream society that is restricting it from being publicly available? Provable links with medical conditions seem to be difficult to establish, some feel that substances like alcohol and tobacco are freely available so why shouldn’t cannabis also be?

The future of cannabis is uncertain, it appears not to have a level of social acceptability that other traditional substances enjoy, yet has a vocal following asking for equality for cannabis users.
