Oil rig jobs, UK based or not, all have many of the same requirements, and it really takes a special person to thrive in this different working environment. If you think you’re up for it, however, it can be a very profitable field to enter. However, you’ve got to be ready to make some sacrifices. Here is some basic information about oil rig jobs that you may find in the UK.

First of all, Oil Rig Jobs can be dangerous. You will be working around large pieces of equipment, and you may be climbing high up on the rigs. However, don’t let this scare you. The equipment is constantly being checked for safety, and it undergoes extensive maintenance and repairs all the time. If there’s even a small chance that a part is going bad or has been damaged, it is replaced right away. Oil rig jobs are also dirty, and it’s not uncommon to find yourself covered in grim, dirt, and oil at the end of the day. If you don’t like that idea, then these jobs aren’t for you.

Second, oil rig jobs are demanding. This is not a standard eight to five job. Instead, you’ll be working long hours for as many as 14 days in a row. The good news, however, is that you then get at least that many days off, if not more. Some people get 21 days off after they work 14 days, which translates to some very nice holiday time. The pay is also very good, especially since you’re working such long hours. Even managers and supervisors will have to work long hours.

Third, working on an oil rig almost always means being away from home. However, the accommodations provided by the company are usually very nice. You more or less live in a hotel for two weeks at a time. While that may not sound like much fun, it’s really not that bad. The company pays for everything, including your laundry. Many times, some or all of your meals are even included. This is especially true if you’re working on an oil rig located in the middle of the ocean. These off-shore drilling rigs usually provide a bit more in the way of comfort and pay since they require you to spend your two weeks out in the middle of the ocean.

However, there is an upside to all of this, and that is the money you can make. As an entry level position, you may find yourself making £50,000 a year. If you start out on an off shore rig, you can make £65,000. That’s without any previous experience in the oil rig industry! As you can see, if you’re willing to work long hours, be away from home for long periods of time, and get dirty, you can make a very nice salary.
