There are two types of Uggs people, those who know what they are and those who don't. In the category of people who know what these are, they either love them or hate them, in the category of people who don't know what they are, they WILL either love them or hate them. So what are they then?
Uggs, started out as boots and most of the footwear you will find in this brand will be boots of all shapes, sizes and descriptions. But because of changing markets and the lure of supply and demand these boot makers have branched out into making, slippers, handbags, sandals, shoes and even kiddies foot wear.
World War I pilots wore them to keep their feet warm in the open bi-planes they were required to fly, and Australian farmers have been wearing them to keep their feet warm since the 1930's. Surfers even wore them to warm their feet on the beach when they came out of the water.
In Australia, they have been worn indoors, outdoors and even as we have told you, on the beach, all with the purpose of keeping the feet warm. A few manufacturers of these boots still exist in Australia, but they market their goods as "Australian sheepskin boots", known as Uggs, or Ughs, as the trademark "UGG" is owned by a US company.
Regardless of what name you give to them and whether they are manufactured in the US or Australia, the essence of the boot remains the same and they have been made a trend setting item of footwear. You only have to see one celebrity wearing an item for it to become trendy and trendsetters such as Oprah and Paris Hilton have acknowledged they are huge fans of the Ugg boot, as have many other celebs. They are incredibly warm and very practical as well as being a fashion statement.
As legend will have it the origin of the name stems from the appearance of the boot which is believed to be "ugly". This became the generic term for any Australian sheepskin boot. This word is found in reference to these boots in Australian dictionaries, and it was never trademarked.
The capitalist Americans found this out and registered a trademark which operates under the "Decker Outdoor Corporation", who are also by the way, the parent company of UGG Australia.
