One of the beloved American presidents, Theodore Roosevelt, once said, “Pray not for lighter burdens but for stronger backs.” Of course, he was talking figuratively and not literally. Almost everyone is mobile and on the go nowadays. Oversized bags or backpacks have become must-haves, especially among women. As people’s lives and schedules grow busier, the bags they use have grown proportionately bigger, too.
Most androgynous bags are now larger to better accommodate and make more room for high tech gadgets that have become part of daily life. These are mobile phones, iPods, digital cameras, and even mini laptops. Some bags also reflect the owners’ lifestyle. For instance, healthy buffs that go to the gym carry around a change of clothes, shoes, and a bottle of water, on top of the “regular” items like the gadgets. Many even spend good money on their bags, to the point of taking out small payday advances so they could purchase their dream bags.
Still, the downside of lugging around oversized bags may leave the user with back, neck, and shoulder pain. Carrying heavy bags can even cause headaches and aggravate arthritic conditions. According to the British Chiropractic Association, bearing big and heavy bags could cause neck injuries by stretching the nerves. It adds, “…Carrying a heavy bag over one shoulder (like most women do) also causes a person to totally shift the body’s stance as he or she hike the shoulder up and, over time, this can shorted the muscles, resulting in a twisted or lop-sided body position that in turn can lead to back pain.” So, how can people strike a good balance between carrying the bags with all their important stuff and protecting their bodies from the added burden? Here are some helpful tips to help people carry their beloved bags right.
First, when using backpacks, adjust the straps so it falls around the middle of one’s back. Muscles in that area of the back are stronger. It is not advisable to carry backpacks or sling bags that are too high or too low on the back because it forces the person to lean forward or backward to compensate for the weight. Secondly, switch sides regularly, particularly when carrying shoulder bags or hand-carry luggage. Alternate carrying the bag on each shoulder is good so the weight does not fall on only one side of the body.
Lastly, avoid carrying bags in the crook of one’s arm. If people, particularly women, hold something at arm’s length, the pressure it puts on the body is five times greater than carrying it close to the chest.
