Anyone spending more than Rs 5000 on a Portable Multimedia Player had better know what he is buying. In general Flash based Portable Multimedia Players have more storage space, a better audio and video performance. And not for nothing, because they vie for attention amidst sub – Rs 10,000 multimedia cell phones, which have their own added benefits. Features such as FM radio and better screens are taken for granted. What you need to look at is the quality of audio and video, as most of these Portable Multimedia Players will support movie playback – unless they are specifically targeted at music only groups. Photo viewing options is also nowadays a standard feature in almost all the Portable Multimedia Players.

SanDisk’s Sansa E280 has experiences a sharp decline in it’s pricing – it’s an 8 GB Portable Multimedia Player, priced lower than its 4 GB sibling which was costlier last year. The E280 is built like a tank; it is also very traditional-looking, and has a nice solid metal back finished in matte. The scroll wheel dishes out some feedback, but it’s a scroll type wheel and not touch sensitive like iPod Nano or classic. Speaking of which the new iPod is gorgeous! It’s nearly half the length of the previous iPod Nano, and a little wider with a slightly larger and better screen. The smudge happy yet utterly sexy chromed rear makes a comeback, and the new iPod Nano is compact enough to sit in the tightest pocket without a fuss. It has got a very good video playback and Apple claims to have made the battery life better as well. Their click wheel is as good as I remember, and with controls designed into it there as no protrusions of any sort on any part of the body. And with all those cool colors, it really makes a style statement.

Samsung’s T10 is even slimmer than the iPod Nano, and lighter, with a fiber body instead of metal. Its sibling, the Samsung YP-S5 is very similar to the Samsung S3 launched last year, with a sideways sliding body that opens to reveal the inbuilt speaker and disable the headphone jack. Both these players features illuminated touch controls – great value flaunt, but perfectly usable. One irritation that I had was the sound volume getting reset to 50 percent every time I switch from loudspeakers to the headphones. And speaking of loudspeakers… they are adequately loud.

Very unassuming and un-glamours the Philips GoGear might be, but it is well built, satin black player that’s replete with features. The only let down is the screen – it is neither bright nor clear. It’s quite readable but as a video Portable Multimedia Player we expect better.

The iPod nano is now one of the most impressive music players on the market. Its small size combined with its large features make it an extremely cool gadget and a must have for every music nut.
