You’ve got that 20-year high school reunion coming up soon and for the last six weeks you’ve been really trying to improve your appearance. You’ve been dieting and walking daily; you’ve even started doing sit-ups in the morning before your day begins in an attempt to tighten those 45 year old abs. You look in the mirror one morning after bruising your teeth and you notice a dull luster to what really should be pearly whites. Then you remember you have a dentist appointment in two days and while you’re there, you decide to get your teeth whitened professionally.

Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions about having your teeth whitened professionally.

Do I have to visit a specially trained dentist to get this procedure done?

That’s a very insightful question. Most dentists do cosmetic dentistry work now days. Since whitening your teeth is one of the most basic procedures offered, chances are your personal dentist offers it. It’s so easy that a cave-dentist can do it and bring you results others will notice for a long time to come!

I have sensitive teeth and gums. I hear this procedure sometimes leaves your teeth even more sensitive. Is this true?

I see you are concerned about your overall oral care and comfort, and I appreciate that aspect. While some people do experience slight sensitivity for a day or two after the procedure, this normally clears up pretty fast. The best advice is to limit your intake of extreme hot or cold liquids for the first 48-hours after having the procedure done.

Is this procedure safe?

Good question--thank you for asking. Based on countless studies on thousands upon thousands of patients, no disadvantageous changes have been documented and the associated microscopic research shows no changes to the tooth surface with use of 10% bleaching solution.

Will I see immediate results?

You bet you will. Normally, teeth will be their brightest immediately after the cosmetic procedure and then the brightness will tend to even out and remain stable, usually for six months or more.

I took antibiotics, mainly tetracycline as a child. My teeth are now a dull, almost grayish color. Will professional whitening work for me?

That’s a fantastic question. Those of us in our 40’s and 50’s took many antibiotics as kids not realizing what it would do to our bodies as adults. While tetracycline stained teeth can be a challenge to whiten, you should expect to see results from the procedure. It may take multiple attempts, but that’s alright.
