Dental implants are used to permanently replace missing teeth. They can replace teeth that are missing from injury, illness, disease, decay, or simple wear and tear. Not only do they improve a person’s appearance, but they also improve the function of the person’s mouth. Learning more about what happens during the dental implant procedure will help you decide if this is the right cosmetic dentistry option for you.

BEFORE THE DENTAL IMPLANT PROCEDURE

Before you can have dental implants placed you need an oral examination. The dentist will check to make sure your gums and remaining teeth are healthy and treat and problems they encounter during the exam. They will also take an x-ray to determine whether or not you have enough jawbone to get a dental implant.

DURING THE DENTAL IMPLANT PROCEDURE

The dental implant procedure takes place in two phases. Phase one involves a surgery to prepare the jawbone for the implant. During this surgery a titanium rod is placed in the jawbone. This is done under sedation or general anesthesia.

The next phase involves a second surgery. During the second surgery the dentist will screw the dental implant to the titanium post. This surgery is also done under sedation.

AFTER THE DENTAL IMPLANT PROCEDURE

After you have had both surgeries for the dental implant procedure a healing period between three to six months takes place. During this time the dental implant is integrating with your jawbone. The benefit of having dental implants is that after they are healed they can be cared for the same as your natural teeth. With regular brushing and care a dental implant can last years. However, it should be noted that the crown that attaches to the titanium rod may become damaged and need replacing.
