How to use an AED

The electrode pads of the AED are applied to the bare chest of the patient when the machine is ready to be used. The device has the ability to automatically analyze the condition of the patient. Once the pads are attached, it is advisable to avoid touching the patient to prevent a false reading. If the machine detects that the patient is in a rhythmic shock, it will use the battery to charge its internal capacitor and deliver the shock to the patient. This system is deemed safe and ensures a fast delivery of the electrical charge. Again it is advised to avoid physical contact with the patient during the administration of the shock.
