Marijuana is one of the most popular recreation drugs in the world, but this is often at odds with its legal status. Yet the threat of prosecution does not apparently persuade the millions of people who use marijuana every year to stop using it. This article will look at how marijuana is viewed in the US.

The Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970 legislates the legality of drugs within the United States. The controlled substances are split into five differing categories or ‘schedules’ based on their medical use and if they are deemed to be possibly abused. Cannabis is classed as a Schedule 1 drug, meaning it has been classed as having no medical use, but with a high possibility of abuse.

There are a number of organisations that are attempting to lobby to reform cannabis laws in the United States. One such organisation, established in 1970, is the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. They aim to present a voice in the debate over the legality of marijuana that believes that there should be a halt to the arrest of marijuana smokers.

The topic of marijuana use has been around for many years, from its historic references to modern attitudes. Many contemporary sub-cultures have reference to marijuana use, in many cases this popular status is not only in reference to its psychoactive effects but is also entangled with the notoriety of its legal status. It is difficult to know how the majority of society views cannabis, do they see it as a malign substance whose effects should be controlled, or do people draw comparisons with alcohol and say that it should be the individual’s right and responsibility to regulate what they consume. There are many strong views on both sides of this debate.

For some people, the future of the legal standing of marijuana in the US is unclear. Recent statements by the US government are seen by some to be signalling a possible change in attitudes. In fact, some commentators view such possible changes as similar to the amendments that eventually ended the prohibition of alcohol sales. Whether this becomes reality is a question that can only be answered in time.
