Jawbreakers are possibly the longest lasting and most unusual candies in the world, and they have been around for longer than most of us even know. Many people can recall saving their treasured jawbreakers for weeks as children waiting until they licked all the way to the center. This is still one of the most popular types of bulk candy being sold today and it is definitely still the hardest candy known to man. Jawbreakers usually come with colored speckles across the white outer coating, but they are also sometimes designed to look like eyeballs, planets and other whimsical creations.

So just where did jawbreakers come from? Well, just like other confections such as bubble gum and hard candies, the root of these extremely hard suckers can be traced back to ancient Arab society. The people of India started making sugar from the boiled syrup of sugarcane plants, and around 1100 AD the Arabs passed the tradition along to the Europeans. It was not until the 16th century that sugar was used to make candies though, and thanks to the discovery of its sweet confectionary properties we now have jawbreakers and other treats.

Sugar must be cooked at high temperatures until it is crystallized to make jawbreakers and other hard candies. Most hard candies are very small, but when Salvador Ferrari and his two brothers-in-law founded the Ferrari Pan Candy Company in 1919 they quickly realized they had to do something different. This was when the first jawbreakers were made. These round candies range in size from a tiny 1/4” ball to a massive 3-3/8” ball, and they are actually usually hollow except for the giant 3-3/8” balls that come with gum-filled centers.

The next time you are in the market for some bulk candy, why not pick up a few jawbreakers? They’re sure to bring back memories from childhood and will definitely last for quite a while – just don’t break your jaw trying to bite into them.
