From the Kaiser Permanente Colorado network in the west to the Kaiser health care providers back east in Georgia, one fact remains consistent – this nonprofit health maintenance organization gives back to the community. This is exemplified by a recent donation that Kaiser Permanente Georgia gave to the Morehouse School of Medicine. Kaiser Permanente recently announced a $500,000 grant to the school that will fund a leadership program aimed at reducing health disparities for primary care and mental health.

Representatives from Kaiser Permanente Georgia presented the $500,000 grant to the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at the Morehouse School of Medicine back in October. Together with Kaiser Permanente, the school will help to develop and put into operation a workforce leadership program with a specific set of goals in mind. The program, if executed successfully, will reduce health disparities in primary care and mental health by creating an integrated approach to these important areas of health care.

The officials from Kaiser Permanente presented the generous donation along with representatives from the Morehouse School of Medicine, as well as Former Surgeon General David Satcher, MD, Director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute. The check presentation was held at the Louis W. Sullivan National Center for Primary Care, followed by a tour of the school. “Morehouse School of Medicine strives to improve the health and well being of individuals and communities,” said Peter Andruszkiewicz, President of Kaiser Permanente Georgia. “Similarly, Kaiser Permanente’s vision is to end health disparities, help everyone get the care they need and make better health a reality for all. This partnership will help address the findings of our needs assessment and ultimately make better health a reality for all.”

It’s easy to see how Kaiser Permanente Colorado, Georgia, Southern California, Northern California and all the other networks of this national health care provider have a dedication to helping the communities they serve. Grants like this are just one example. This grant will be used to train scholars to encourage effective policy and practice in helping to solve the problems that cause health disparities, improve access to care, and develop health care leaders who can help integrate mental and primary health care. And the money donated by Kaiser will also assist in the creation of partnerships between mental and primary health care to more effectively diagnose and treat conditions relating to mental health.
